PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Taking a new or existing idea through the development process or even just testing the feasibility of a product all forms part of what the Product Development Technology Station (PDTS) offers.

A client might have a great idea, but not the know-how or means to convert it into a product. The PDTS can assist from start to finish or only contribute to a certain aspect of the production process.

This includes conceptualizing an idea, design of a product and a feasibility report or feedback if it is practical enough for production. The station also converts ideas into concepts, which are usually done with hand sketches or CAD drawings.

A detailed design follows after the approval of a certain concept by the client. The station also assists with Finite Element Analyses (FEA) to make sure the product can be used for its intended purposes, for example whether it is strong enough for production.

After design, prototyping can also be done with the assistance of the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing at the Central University of Technology, Free State, in Bloemfontein by using 3D printing machines.

Examples of product development done by the PDTS include plastic enclosures for mechanical and electronic components.
